I joined FCCPS four years ago as the assistant principal of Mount Daniel Elementary School. It was a special time for me as it coincided with my son starting kindergarten at the same school. Before joining FCCPS, I worked in another school division, and a colleague reached out to tell me about an opening they thought I would be a great fit for. They didn’t know that I lived in that division and my child was about to enter kindergarten at that very school. It caught me off guard, as I hadn’t considered a move, but I decided to take a leap of faith and reached out to the Mount Daniel principal to learn more about the position.
Shortly after, I applied, participated in the panel interview, and officially joined the Mount Daniel family. It didn’t take long for me to realize that this change was the right move—everything seemed meant to be. From day one, I was warmly welcomed by the staff, students, and community. The Mount Daniel team is truly exceptional, with a deep commitment to student care that shines through in everything they do. It’s a unique and rewarding experience to lead and work within the same school division that my children attend. I am deeply grateful to contribute to the high-quality education and care that all FCCPS students receive daily.
When I reflect on what sets FCCPS apart from other divisions across the nation, one thing stands out: Its deeply personal and close-knit nature. In the heart of bustling Northern Virginia, FCCPS maintains a small-town feel. Everyone across the division knows each other by name. It’s common for the superintendent to visit schools and greet individuals personally.
The division also fosters connections by creating opportunities to collaborate with administrators and staff from other campuses, building strong relationships on both professional and personal levels. It’s not unusual to open the Falls Church City Newspaper and see familiar faces—pictures of students and stories about special school events. My children are always thrilled to spot themselves or their friends in the newspaper, and we often cut out and display those clippings in our home.
Beyond the schools, FCCPS is interwoven into the community through wonderful events that bring everyone together. Whether attending local activities or running into families around town, the sense of connection is unmistakable. Students often run up to me to share fun facts, which I love highlighting on our Mount Daniel morning news show. At FCCPS, we have a rare and special opportunity to build strong partnerships between schools, families, and the community as a whole. Everyone is invested in our children’s well-being and success. The secret sauce of FCCPS is this close-knit community—our teachers, our students, and our families—all coming together with shared purpose and care.
